An unusually long and visibly tense exchange between Pope Leo XIV and Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo after Wednesday’s General Audience in St. Peter’s Square. The Argentine prelate had unsuccessfully sought a private audience with the Pope for months.
Leo XIV visited Genazzano’s Shrine of Our Lady of Good Counsel on September 7, riding in an electric vehicle. He unveiled a fresco commemorating his May 2025 pilgrimage and celebrated the Eucharist. The visit reinforces an emerging pattern: Leo XIV enjoys getting out of the Vatican for drives, excursions and shrine visits, even as a substantial governing workload awaits him back in Rome.

An ecumenical “rainbow service” was held ahead of the homosexual march in Erfurt, Germany, on September 5, inside the Catholic St. Severi Church. The event featured rainbow flags, participants in drag-style dress, and a unicorn displayed on rainbow-colored fabric. St. Severi belongs to the Catholic Parish of St. Laurentius. The Diocese of Erfurt is headed by Bishop Ulrich Neymeyr.

“God has become bread” (Dio che si è fatto pane), Leo XIV said on September 5 during an audience with the Perpetual Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament. Taken literally, the words suggest the heresy of impanation: the divine Word united to bread that remains bread, somewhat analogously to the Incarnation. Catholic doctrine is transubstantiation. After consecration, the substance of bread no longer remains. It is not God who becomes bread, but bread that becomes Christ’s Body. The favorable interpretation is that Leo XIV is using devotional or metaphorical language. Benedict XVI used similar language.
