The Bill Gates Foundation is listed as the first “Platinum” sponsor of the international interreligious peace gathering organized by the Catholic Community of Sant’Egidio in Assisi, Italy, from October 25–27, 2026.
Pope Leo XIV cancelled his planned attendance, reportedly for health reasons.
The Gates Foundation appeared in the highest sponsorship category alongside two other organizations: BFIO and Fondazione Cariplo, an Italian philanthropic foundation.
The German Bishops’ Conference was also listed among the event’s official partners.
The amount contributed by the Gates Foundation to the Assisi meeting has not been publicly disclosed. Neither have any specific conditions or agreements associated with its sponsorship.

Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, Archbishop of Algiers, believes that Leo XIV is continuing Francis’s direction. He told CathoBel on October 23 that the cardinals at the conclave “wanted the Church to continue in the direction opened by Francis, but with different governance. And that is exactly what is happening.”
And, “There are doors that Francis opened which Leo would not have been able to open, but Leo’s character will allow us all to move further forward together.”
On the Church’s mission, Cardinal Vesco said: “We are the Church of this people. Not a proselytizing Church, not a Church that is there to convert, but a Church that aspires to be one of the components of this people.”
