Tradition of Switzerland - Silvesterchläuse Twice a year, the Silvesterchläuse appear in the Appenzellerland in Switzerland to chase away evil spirits and bring good wishes for the new year. They celebrate on two dates: 31 December and 13 January, known locally as Alter Silvester. There are three traditional types of Chläuse – the Schöne, Schö-Wüeschte, and Wüeschte – each wearing unique, fully handmade costumes, masks, and heavy bells. The groups wander from house to house, offering blessings and performing rhythmic bell ringing that can be heard across the valleys. Silvesterklaus is a masked person taking part in Saint Sylvester's Day festivities in Appenzell, Switzerland, and thus contributing to maintain the Chlausen tradition. A Silvesterklaus or New Year's Mummer (Chlaus in Swiss German) is dressed up as a Saint Sylvester or New Year's Eve character. In the Reformedhalf-canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, the turn of the year is still celebrated in this way. The …เพิ่มเติม
Fantastic headdress. But also the singing too is quite evocative. We call that yodelling, do we not? The hills are alive. I prayed that Mass today, of St. Sylvester.
refer to St Thomas Aquinas on immigration...according to the Saint, one requirement is that the immigrant not change the existing culture. Certain basic beliefs must be the same. Prior immigrants from Italy, Poland, France, etc were from countries/cultures that understood Christendom (granted, often honored in the breach)
Meditation Three reflections on the past year Santoral by Juan Esteban Grosez, S.J. 1.-Could you say with truth like St. Paul: I have fought with courage, I have concluded the race, I have kept the faith? Here you are at the end of the year; review in your spirit all the good and all the evil you have done during this year, and see if your good deeds are more numerous than the bad ones. How many days passed without you doing anything for God? However, this year was given to you only to serve him, to do penance for your sins and deserve heaven through the practice of good works. 2.-Where are now the pleasures and honors that you enjoyed during this year? Everything has passed, and you only have the sad memory of having offended God for passing and fallacious goods! Isn't it true that, on the contrary, you experience great joy for the good you did trying to please God? You no longer experience the effort that your good deeds cost you and you hope to be rewarded by them. Your life will pass …เพิ่มเติม
We continue Luisella Scrosati’s series on the orientation of Christian worship with her fifth part, “Le singolarità della basilica costantiniana di San Pietro”, originally published in Italian on the website of La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana on November 30, and reproduced here by permission of the editors. (Read Part 1; Part 2; Part 3; Part 4) The rule of praying towards the east, which determined the orientation of churches, had some exceptions. This is neither surprising nor scandalous. It has already been mentioned that the east-west axis was sometimes not feasible, either because the buildings already existed and were converted for religious use, or because new buildings had to take into account the presence of roads and other factors that made traditional orientation impossible. Karl Otto Nußbaum argued (see Part 4) that Italy, and Rome in particular, had no traces of oriented prayer, at least until the eighth century. On the contrary, Monsignor Stefan Heid has shown that …

Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744–1812), who lived in Judengasse in Frankfurt am Main, sent his five sons to the largest cities in Europe at that time, where they created the first international banking system. In 1789, when the last war lasted until 1815, in a very, very short period of time, it was said that no government and no king would consider going to war without the support of the Rothschilds, as they had become so incredibly influential and powerful. In his English homily (excerpted below), delivered at the Eucharist in memory of Pope Benedict XVI on the eve of the third anniversary of his death, Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller praised the former pope for his theological legacy [and despite the fact that Ratzinger’s pontificate paved the way for Bergoglio's]. “As prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he set standards of the highest diligence, intellectual precision, and incorruptibility for the Roman Magisterium.” And: “During his pontificate, he was one of the greatest theologians on the Cathedra Petri.” And again: “He has left us an immense theological legacy of exceptional quality and was rightly recognized as one of the great Catholic intellectuals of our time.” For the Writer, Not the Reader When Cardinal Müller presented Pope Benedict XVI with the first volume of the Opera Omnia, he explained that the project would eventually comprise 16 volumes amounting to an estimated 25,000–30,000 pages. September 2025 The Nazi book burnings in Germany and Austria in the 1930s targeted books that the German Student Union deemed subversive. In Ray Bradbury’s 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451, the firemen burn subversive books. In 2019, the school district, Conseil scolaire catholique (CSC) Providence, which operates as the French language school board for southwestern Ontario, burned classic books and used the ashes as fertilizer in the “spirit of reconciliation.” In 2025, I was physically banned from my old school, WJ Mouat Secondary, by the Abbotsford School District, because I went there to launch my book, The Scarlet Lesson. The operating principle in the instances above is that books are a danger. But burning books or banishing authors is like shooting the messenger: The message doesn’t perish. As the ancient Greek dramatist Sophocles is often purported to have said,“You can kill a man, but you can’t kill an idea”. My idea was that Christian teachers didn’t murder students in Indian …
If you want to get an idea of everything that is wrong with Canada today, what has sadly happened to Jim McMurtry is an example. He has been fired and cancelled for telling the truth. Thank God for courageous people like him.
