Father Augustus Tolton escaped slavery in Missouri to become the first openly recognized Black Catholic priest, ministering in Quincy, Illinois and establishing the first standalone Black Catholic church in Chicago. While there are currently no African American saints, he is currently a candidate for sainthood. To become a priest, Augustus Tolton had to leave his homeland, cross an ocean, and study in a foreign country. No Catholic seminary in the United States would admit a Black man in the 1880s. He had already fled his birthplace in order to be free, rowing across the Mississippi River with his mother and two siblings to escape slavery-defending Missouri for the Union state of Illinois during the Civil War.
