Patriarch accuses Curia Cardinal. Syriac Catholic Patriarch Ignatius Youssef III Younan has accused Curia Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, of helping orchestrate an effort to remove him. Younan told the Substack.com-account 'The Pillar' that Gugerotti encouraged bishops to turn against him. He also alleges that Gugerotti helped develop the new papal law now being used against him. Younan, 81, has led the Syriac Catholic Church since 2009. He is the first Eastern Catholic patriarch to face proceedings under Pope Leo XIV’s 'Mutua concordia', promulgated on August 29. The process against him was reportedly initiated on September 4 - just six days later. Under the new law, a synod may request a patriarch’s resignation for a grave cause. If he refuses, proceedings can continue under another bishop’s presidency. Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington, writing at NcROnline.org on September 23, said that “during the past six months, we have witnessed a remarkable transformation in Catholic teaching on war.” McElroy praised the “tremendous progress” made during that period toward “eclipsing the role of the just war tradition in Catholic teaching.” “The just war framework has been distorted to become a source of justification for those inclined to go to war, rather than a constraint on war,” McElroy claimed. A priest has been killed and four people injured in a knife attack at the Benedictine abbey in Jarosław, Poland, on September 24. Police say a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen attacked four men and a woman shortly before 9:30 a.m. and was detained at the scene. Fr. Stanisław died from his injuries. Fr. Marek was seriously wounded. The other victims were also hospitalized. The motive has not yet been established.

Hosts from tabernacle scattered across a town square. On September 19, unknown perpetrators entered the Sacred Heart of Mary parish church in Guitiriz, Lugo, Spain, forced open the tabernacle and stole the silver ciborium containing hosts. They were later found scattered outside in the town square. The Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol described the incident as a grave profanation of the Eucharist. The parish filed a complaint and the Guardia Civil opened an investigation. Investigators are reportedly reviewing security cameras from nearby businesses. Bishop Fernando García Cadiñanos will celebrate a Eucharist of reparation at the church on 29 September.

Emmanuel Macron’s decision not to attend the papal Eucharists during Leo XIV’s visit to France is in keeping with France’s state religion of laicism. Jacques Chirac did not attend John Paul II’s celebrations in 1997, nor did Nicolas Sarkozy attend Benedict XVI’s in 2008.
