Bergoglio/Fernández: “The death penalty violates the inalienable dignity of every person, regardless of the circumstances. In this regard, we must recognize that the firm rejection of the death penalty shows to what extent it is possible to recognise the inalienable dignity of every human being and to accept that he or she has a place in this universe. If I do not deny that dignity to the worst of criminals, I will not deny it to anyone.”
John Paul II (Evangelium Vitae): “Punishment ought not go to the extreme of executing the offender except in cases of absolute necessity: in other words, when it would not be possible otherwise to defend society.”
John Paul II's Catechism of the Catholic Church: “[Scripture and] the traditional teaching of the Church has acknowledged as well-founded the right and duty of the legitimate public authority to punish malefactors by means of penalties commensurate with the gravity of the crime, not excluding, in cases of extreme gravity, the death penalty.” …More

Many, unwilling or unknowingly, are 'aiding" Bergoglio to continue on his path of doctrinal destruction, by asserting that Bergoglio "is just the continuation"... of the REAL POPES - FROM Paul VI to Benedict XVI. It's just manipulation and psychological abuse...gaslighting if you will.

Even John Paul II’s stance is problematic, because it seems to reject that punishment for crime is an end, in and of itself, in the realm of criminal justice. That a man is capable of sinning in such a way that his mortal life is forfeit speaks to his great (though, certainly not infinite) dignity.

Morning by morning I will destroy all the wicked in the land, cutting off all evildoers from the city of the Lord. (Ps. 101:8).”—The Roman Catechism of the Council of Trent, 1566, Part III, 5, n. 4.

The exact opposite is true. The Death Penalty actually affirms peoples' dignity, to deny it them is to deny their dignity for thereby they are shown the opportunity to repent and take responsibility for their crimes, meeting the requirements of the measure of God's Justice, which might be death if what they did is that severe. “But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain …More

For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience.”—Rom 13:4-5. If they think they might be meeting their death within a short period of time they might have greater incentive to convert. If the worst you can do to the person is incarcerate them for the rest of their life, and they are fed 3 meals a day etc. they might not have that same sense of urgency to take responsibility and atone for their wicked deed.
