Confirmed: President Obama to speak again at Al Smith fundraiser for NY Catholic Charities
While the event typically takes a lighter tone, with the presidential candidates roasting each other in humorous speeches, this year’s event comes at an especially awkward time, with the U.S. bishops having recently concluded their “Fortnight for Freedom” - a response to the Obama administration’s HHS mandate that will force employers, including many religious employers, to include contraception, sterilization and abortifacient drugs in their health plans.
That mandate, as well as other attacks on religious freedom coming from the Obama administration, have been condemned in the strongest terms by many of the country’s bishops and religious leaders.
Another major conflict with Catholics and other Christians developed when the president began to actively oppose the Defense of Marriage Act last year; he has also just recently announced his support for same-sex “marriage.”

Under "normal" circumstances, I think it would be an outrage to invite him. In light of the HHS mandate and his vigorous stand against any pro-Life position, I think that it is even more of an outrage, and that it is an out-and-out betrayal by New York Catholic Charities, of what we, as practicing Catholics, stand for.
They should un-invite him, immediately, emphatically and without recourse!

Obviously, Thou Shalt Not Kill means nothing to Catholic Charities (and to many Catholics who will vote for him) - so let’s invite one who endorses it.

Dear Archbishop Dolan,
I urge you to tell Catholic Charities that they must either disinvite Presidnet Obama from their annual Al Smith fundraising dinner, or inform them that if he does come you will confront him to his face: no beaming Irish smile, no let's-make-nice, no compromise and no joke.
Do not break the back of the Catholic resistance and the hearts of stunned Catholics from coast to coast and around the world.
Remember why you bear the crozier: to protect the lambs and dismay the wolves, and not the other way around.
Under the same Lord and the same Judgment.

His own Communications Office didn't know anything about it?
Both O'Connor and Egan cancelled such appearances in the past?
