Blessed Matthia dei Nazzarei | Mother of Charity & Mystic | Catholic Saint Story for Kids
Blessed Matthia dei Nazzarei (1253–1319) was an Italian noblewoman whose life became a powerful witness to radical poverty, charity, and mystical union with God. Born into a wealthy and influential family in Matelica, Italy, Matthia chose a path entirely contrary to worldly expectations, dedicating herself to prayer, humility, and service to the poor. She first lived as a Benedictine, where her deep spiritual discipline and compassion quickly became evident. Later, she embraced the Poor Clare way of life, drawn to the Franciscan ideal of absolute poverty and joyful trust in God. As abbess, Matthia became known as the “Mother of Charity,” not only for her leadership but for her personal example of self-emptying love and concern for the sick, the hungry, and the forgotten. Blessed Matthia was also gifted with mystical graces, including visions and profound contemplative prayer, yet she remained deeply grounded, humble, and obedient. Her holiness was expressed less in extraordinary words and more in daily acts of mercy, patience, and sacrificial love. Her life reminds us that sanctity is found not in status or comfort, but in surrendering everything to Christ. Blessed Matthia dei Nazzarei continues to inspire those seeking a life rooted in charity, poverty of spirit, and deep trust in God.
