June 15th - Saint of the Day: Saint Amos, Prophet
Faith without justice is just noise. Saint Amos was not a priest, a scholar, or a polished religious influencer. He was a shepherd from Tekoa, tending flocks and sycamore trees, until God called him to walk into a wealthy, comfortable kingdom and tell the truth nobody wanted to hear. Israel looked blessed from the outside. Money was flowing. Worship was happening. People were showing up for the religious festivals. But behind the scenes, the poor were being crushed, the courts were corrupt, and the powerful were using religion as a cover for injustice. Then Amos spoke the line that still shakes the soul: “Let justice surge like waters, and righteousness like an unfailing stream.” That is not a slogan. It is a warning. Saint Amos reminds us that God is not impressed by public faith that does not become private conversion. Mass should change how we treat people. Prayer should make us more honest. Worship should make us more merciful. This prophet of justice is still asking the uncomfortable question: Does your faith look good, or does it actually change how you live?
