Saint Cassian of Imola | The Teacher Martyred by His Own Students | Feast Day August 13 Cassian is traditionally associated with Imola in northern Italy and is believed to have lived during the era of Roman persecution, probably around the 3rd or early 4th century. He worked as a schoolmaster, teaching young students the skills of reading and writing. But Cassian was also a Christian. According to ancient tradition, he refused to worship the Roman gods and remained faithful to Jesus Christ. For this, he was condemned to a particularly unusual and cruel martyrdom. THE TEACHER AND HIS STUDENTS The early Christian poet Prudentius, writing around the beginning of the 5th century, preserved the famous account of Cassian's martyrdom. In the year 235, Rome had a problem: two men claiming to lead the Church. Pontian was the real Pope. Hippolytus was a genius theologian who went rogue and became history's FIRST antipope. Then Emperor Maximinus Thrax arrested them BOTH and condemned them to the brutal mines of Sardinia. What happened next changed the Church forever: Pontian became the FIRST pope in history to resign, on September 28, 235, the earliest precisely dated event in papal history. There are some words that once occupied a central place in the life of the Catholic Church but are now seldom heard, and I want to talk about one of those words today. The word is “modernism.” Ask the average Catholic today what modernism is, and many will not know how to answer. Ask when they last heard a sermon about it, and many would say, “Never.” Yet there was a time when the Church regarded modernism as such a grave danger that Pope St. Pius X devoted an entire encyclical to exposing it. In 1907, in Pascendi Dominici Gregis, he called modernism “the synthesis of all heresies.” Those are extraordinary words. Popes do not use language like that lightly.
