Anti-fascist demonstrators surrounded the square to protest the event, which led to a heavily reinforced deployment of the regional police, the Mossos d'Esquadra. The situation quickly escalated into a confrontation when counter-protestors twice attempted to break through security cordons, prompting police officers to deploy batons during a series of crowd control charges.
