Major Scandal in Scotland…

Perhaps partly due to the fact it brings in a lot of money, the Royal Scots College in Salamanca [pictured above] retains its status as a seminary with staff but no seminarians. However, prospective students do what is called a propaedeutic (preparatory) few months there before starting seminary at the Scots College in Rome.

A group of priests in the Archdiocese of Glasgow, have raised concerns with the papal nuncio (London) about the Scottish Bishops’ nomination of Fr David Wallace, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Lourdes, Cardonald, to be appointed as the next Rector of the Royal Scots College in Salamanca, Spain.

Fr David Wallace is allegedly a double-living priest who has been involved in a long-standing same-sex relationship with another priest for a long time now. His situation is apparently well known among the clergy in the archdiocese and, it seems, has been so for several years.

Some time ago, I sent a letter to the Archbishop of Glasgow, enclosing a list of the names of priests allegedly living double-lives. Apparently, according to priests who were present at a meeting of the clergy, he told his assembled priests to avoid “gossip” and intimated that he had torn up the list I’d sent.

Rightly, the priests who wrote to the nuncio argue that this is a major scandal, and “it will bring more shame to the Church and Priesthood” if this appointment is confirmed.

In recent times, we have had more than our fair share of scandals north of the border, so please pray for the concerned and dedicated priests who conscientiously contacted the nuncio about this latest scandal in Scotland, and pray, too, that the nuncio will act, decisively, to prevent this potentially disastrous appointment.

However, praying not enough. Awareness and Action are also essential. We have an obligation to keep ourselves educated in the Faith and to know the limits and extent of our duty as Catholics to defend and spread our Catholic religion. It’s not up to us to decide whether a pontiff is duly elected, but it certainly is up to us to make sure that the Faith is not attacked by priests and prelates within our parishes, schools and seminaries.

Thus, we must be aware that just because a priest is promoted to high office within the Church, doesn’t mean that he is sound or that the appointment is merited. All too often, in the current state of the Church – which is beyond a mere “crisis”, where we have bishops and priests who are, in fact, apostates – the opposite is the case.
So, yes, please do pray for all involved in the “promotion” of Fr Wallace, but also, please act in whatever way you can, to expose and end this scandal.
