By 1969, the “conservative” torch was passed to the likes of Joseph Ratzinger, with anyone to his right being seen as positively reactionary. The modernists, even though they were officially condemned, were strengthening, and basically succeeded in running almost all traditional Catholics out of the priesthood. The faithful Church will be small, and poor. Not necessarily a bad thing.
