Benedict XVI: Popular Piety is Important.

Popular piety is valued as an integral part of the new evangelization process in Latin America. This was the observation of Benedict XVI in his address to the Plenary of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. The Pope noted that the encounter with the Word of God and participation in Church activities illuminate the minds and hearts of the faithful, making them feel alive and part of the Catholic community. But he said it's necessary to ensure that foreign elements don't enter into celebrations and liturgical events. However, he said popular piety, made through the deep devotion to Our Lady and made explicit in pilgrimages to Marian shrines, is fully part of the continent's mission and the new evangelization developed by the 5th general conference of the episcopate held in Aparecida in 2007.
