Habemus Papam 2005
On that April 19, 2005, the white smoke at 5:50 pm demonstrated to everyone that the Sacred College of Cardinals had elected the new Successor of Saint Peter. To avoid any doubt, even if for a moment, whether the smoke was definitely white or gray, for the first time the happy announcement was accompanied by the bells of the Vatican Basilica. Another novelty was that the announcement began with the greeting "Beloved brothers and sisters" not only in Italian, but also in Spanish, French, German and English, made by Cardinal-Protodeacon Medina Estévez, who, despite being almost eighty years old, pronounced the formulas of "Habemus Papam" with some emotion. The crowd exploded in celebration upon hearing Ratzinger's name, as it was expected and, despite not having the same personality as John Paul II, it represented the continuity of his pontificate. At 6:48 pm, Ratzinger appeared for the first time dressed in white, with the red mursa and pontifical stole like Benedict XVI. He was accompanied by Archbishop Piero Marini, Master of Pontifical Celebrations, and by Mons. Francesco Camaldo, the pontifical ceremonial officer who for almost 20 years was assigned to him for the most solemn and official cardinal rites. The emotion of the Pope himself and the pontifical ceremonial officers was such that everyone forgot to make Ratzinger change not only his cardinal's cassock, but also the black shirt that he had worn that day. Thus, forgetting this detail, contrasting with the candid papal cassock, the cuffs of his black shirt traveled the world in the videos and photos of his first appearance. Among so many emotions and so many rites performed in the span of 1 hour, the great theologian thought about the weight of the words of his moving greeting: he recognized the greatness of his friend John Paul II, he confessed his own simplicity, but supported by the conscience that God supplements human incapacity and trust in everyone's prayer and in the protection of the Virgin Mary. He took up the words with which Paul VI defined him in the bull of his episcopal appointment as Archbishop of Munich in 1977: "now we ask you: work in the vineyard of the Lord".
