It was Obama's second visit to the Vatican as president but his first visit with this pope. In 2009, he and first lady Michelle Obama met Pope Benedict XVI, now pope emeritus. On Thursday, under an overcast sky, the president's motorcade weaved through Rome to be welcomed at the Vatican with great ceremony.
It may not seem that the president and the pope have much in common, but they share similarities. The United States' first African American president and the first Latin American pope both exploded onto the global stage sharing messages of hope and change.

Vor allem italienische und amerikanische Medien vergleichen gerne Obama und den Papst, sprechen von zwei großen Hoffnungsträgern. Wegen der umstrittenen Gesundheitsreform und der Debatte über eine Legalisierung der gleichgeschlechtlichen Lebenspartnerschaften steht Obamas Regierung derzeit in einem Konflikt mit der katholischen Kirche. An diesem Mittwoch im Vatikan lag der Fokus aber hauptsächlich auf den Gemeinsamkeiten. Sagt Anthony J. Figueiredo, Direktor des Päpstlichen Nordamerikanischen Kollegs in Rom, in einem Gespräch mit Radio Vatikan :
„Die Kirche ist besorgt um die ethischen Werte, in diesem Fall gilt die Sorge einer Zerstörung der Familie durch gesetzliche Regelungen der gleichgeschlechtlichen Ehe. Wir glauben an etwas anderes: an das Gesetz in unserem Herzen durch Gott. Wenn wir diesem Gesetz folgen, finden wir wahren Frieden und Freude. Das ist das, was die Kirche will und auch der Papst. Franziskus betont die sozialen Fragen von heute: Armut, Hunger, Frieden im Nahen Osten und in Syrien. Die Vereinigten Staaten sehen den Heiligen Stuhl als den moralischen Fokus, also eine Art moralischen Kompass.“
Das Treffen sollte vor allem die gemeinsamen Anstrengungen beim Kampf gegen Armut und wachsende Ungleichheit definieren. Nach dem 50-minütigen Gespräch traf sich Obama noch mit dem italienischen Präsidenten Giorgio Napolitano sowie dem italienischen Ministerpräsidenten Matteo Renzi. (RV).- El Papa Francisco recibió esta mañana en la Ciudad del Vaticano al presidente de los Estados Unidos de América, Barack Obama. Se trata del primer encuentro entre ambos, puesto que Obama había sido recibido por Benedicto XVI en julio de 2009. Sobre la conversación mantenida se espera el comunicado de prensa de la Santa Sede.
“Welcome”, “Bienvenido”. El Papa Francisco recibió con la sencillez que lo caracteriza al presidente Barack Obama quien, por su parte, respondió: “Gracias. Es maravilloso encontrarme con usted”. Después, en el momento del coloquio privado entre ambos sólo estuvieron presentes los intérpretes. La conversación duró alrededor de 50 minutos. Posteriormente tuvo lugar la ceremonia de intercambio de dones y la presentación al Pontífice de los miembros de la delegación estadounidense.

Junto a Obama también estuvo presente el Jefe de la diplomacia estadounidense, John Kerry, quien en enero pasado mantuvo un encuentro con el Cardenal Pietro Parolin. Y precisamente con el Cardenal Secretario de Estado Obama mantuvo una conversación tras el encuentro con el Papa Francisco.

VATICAN CITY -- Greeting a man he calls an “inspiration,” President Obama paid his first visit to Pope Francis on Thursday, opening a meeting the White House hopes will highlight the leaders’ shared views on economic inequality and poverty and perhaps drown out the president’s conflicts with the Catholic Church hierarchy at home.
A cordon of Swiss guards greeted the president in a modest Vatican courtyard behind St. Peter’s Basilica as he arrived for his first encounter with a man whose popularity and international fame match few figures, one of those, perhaps, being Obama himself -- five years ago.
"It is a great honor. I'm a great admirer," Obama said to the pontiff as he arrived Thursday morning. "Thank you so much for receiving me."
Obama and the pope met privately for about 50 minutes. The president was joined by Secretary of State John F. Kerry and his national security advisor, Susan Rice, as well as a small group of top aides.
The White House views the meeting as a chance to align the president with Francis and his focus on economic justice.
The pope's emphasis on inclusion and the Church's positions on economic issues have impressed him, Obama has said, putting the president in the ranks of many left-leaning Americans who have cheered the new tone coming from the Vatican in the year since Francis became pope.
The president has publicly associated himself with Francis' message several times in recent months. He's referred to the pope in speeches, most notably an address on income inequality Obama delivered last fall.
Obama explained the choice in a written interview with an Italian newspaper published Thursday.
"Given his great moral authority, when the pope speaks, it carries enormous weight," Obama told Corriere della Sera. "He doesn’t just proclaim the Gospel, he lives it. We’ve all been moved by his humility and acts of mercy. His deeds, the simple act of reaching out to the least of these, is a reminder that every one of us has an individual responsibility to live in a righteous way."
Despite the admiration, this is the first time Obama has met or spoken to the pope. Obama met with Pope Francis' predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, at the Vatican in 2009. He noted the meeting as he arrived Thursday.
"I bring greetings from my family," the president said."The last time I came here to meet your predecessor I was able to bring my wife and children."
During Pope Benedict's tenure, Obama, who is not Catholic, rarely aligned himself with the church. His most public dealings with the hierarchy involved contentious fights with American archbishops over abortion rights, contraception and religious freedom.
The U.S. bishops have waged a pitched fight against elements of Obama’s signature healthcare law, saying it forces Catholic institutions to pay for contraception for employees in violation of Church doctrine.
Even on economics, there are clear limits to Obama’s agreement with the pope, a Jesuit who spent most of his career in Latin America. Francis has spoken out against the perils of globalization and “throw away” culture. Obama’s regularly preaches the virtues of capitalism and free trade.
In the interview, Obama acknowledged the differences. “It doesn’t mean we agree on every issue, but his voice is one that I think the world needs to hear. He challenges us.”
