Islamist militants wanted to film, broadcast church explosion in Indonesia

Suspects, who planted bombs at Christ Cathedral, were part of a new terrorist cell inspired by al-Qaeda.

Indonesian police have claimed that Islamist militants involved in a plot to bomb a cathedral in the country before the Easter celebration had planned to film and broadcast the disaster.

The Telegraph quoted police as saying that 19 suspects, who had planted bombs beneath a gas pipeline at the Christ Cathedral near Jakarta, were part of a new terrorist cell inspired by al-Qaeda.

The terrorists had reportedly planned to ignite the bombs, which were defused in a 10-hour operation on Thursday, while services at the 3,000-seat Roman Catholic church were taking place for Good Friday.

Major General Anton Bachrul Alam, spokesman for the national police, said the 19 suspects did not appear to be part of any large, existing terrorist organisation.

“At this moment,it looks like a new cell,” Major General Alam said, adding that of the suspects, many of who were University graduates,“wanted to make a movie and then broadcast it … that was the plan.”
