AMong the virtues are faith, hope and charity; the opposite are called vices, the sources of sin. Gluttony, immorality, greed are the most common. The two cannot exist together. One who has virtues has no vices; they are exclusive. Virtues sanctify the person and all his actions; you become holy and all your actions are holy acts. Vices corrupt a person's soul and everything he does. A person who has vice is an evil person, and talks evil, and his actions are evil. It's the vice that is evil - gluttony, greed, because they contaminate all the actions, appearing therefore in the actions. If suddenly this person dies, it is impossible for him to go to heaven. But one who has a virtue and is sanctified by this virtue and all his actions, he will go to heaven.

He who looks for the pearl of great price will rejoice in finding it, sell all his property and buy this very expensive pearl. Thomas of Aquinas describes this in three ways: (1) the community of men or women living together to know Christ's commands and put them into practice - "whenever two or three are gathered in My Name (to learn my commands), there I am in the midst of them. (2) you join this community because you want to know Christ. (3) You want to OWN yourself: in this world, you are the slave of your money, your house, your job, according to St. Augustine. Living together in Christ's name, you will find Christ there as your pearl of great price, and you discover and own yourself.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Noteworthy: There is wisdom in keeping the weeds with the wheat in the field, for in uprooting the weeds the wheat may also be uprooted (both being next to each other). In life, a good person may be living with a bad person, and depending on the latter, the former may be harmed if the latter is removed. In life, a good person may be living with a bad person, and depending on the latter, the former may be harmed if the latter is removed. They will be kept together, and at the time of the harvest, the end of the world, the angels will gather those who draw others to apostasy, and all the evildoers, and cast them into hell. The saints will shine like the sun in heaven. These 30 continuous Sundays can tell us if we are going to heaven or to hell. The presence or absence of the theological virtue of Faith determines it. All these Masses give us two examples - one with Faith and one with No Faith.

Those who are going to heaven can know that they are going to heaven because they know they have Faith; the same with those who are going to hell: they know it because they have NO Faith. In the world, both good and bad exist; in the Church only the good exist. The first and second parables tell us of a good seed (mustard seed) and a good yeast mixed with flour. In the world, both good and bad exist; in the Church only the good exist. The first and second parables tell us of a good seed (mustard seed) and a good yeast mixed with flour. The good ones (the wheat) produce good fruits; the bad ones (the cockles) bear no good fruits. If you want to go to heaven, it is not enough to obey the Ten Commandments; we must also follow the Eight Beatitudes (the 8th being the crown of all the 7). If you find any one of these in your soul, you are predestined to go to heaven. To be "poor in spirit" means that the soul thinks only of God, loving nothing worldly but only God, even if the body gets anything it wants, emptying the mind of every worldly thought, the heart of loving everything worldly. The commands of the OT are perfected in the NT through the 8 Beatitudes. When God tells you that He loves you, He sends the Holy Spirit to your heart. Your mind begins to know more about God, and your heart loves God more, and you climb from the first beatitude to the next beatitude. While loving parents is just natural, loving God is supernatural. The fruits of the Word of God are the 8 Beatitudes.

Summary (Matt. 13: 24-43, connected with Matt 5:1-11) In order to go to heaven, we must (1) Obey all the ten commandments (Old Testament+; (2) Obey the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are different degrees of blessedness, of happiness. Even just the first beatitude - "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" - means that one is going to heaven.
