The dour Puritans of Massachusetts never liked Christmas to begin with, because the festivities were too much associated with the Catholic faith. In 1659 they made it a crime to celebrate Christmas, punishable by a fine. And the old Puritanism lingers in modern, secular Massachusetts. What a dull, unenjoyable celebration, with no sweets and no cookies for the kids.
