Sacred music: An easter celebration

William Byrd, 1540 - 1623

- Haec dies

Simon Russell Beale presents a special concert for Easter from LSO St Luke's in London, performed by the award-winning choir The Sixteen, conducted by founder Harry Christophers. The music takes us on a journey of over a thousand years, from haunting plainchant through to the celebrated music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Highlights include Palestrina's motet Assumpta Est Maria, and Allegri's Miserere.

The Sixteen with Harry Christophers, I believe. Which church is this,I wonder ? Beautiful harmony & presentation which should be emulated by Australian Catholics. 😁

Hello ACL,
This music makes me want to attend an Anglo-Catholic rite mass, under the new ordinariate. Byrd, was creating new music in his own day, that was in total continuity with Tradition. An excellent model for contemporary Catholic musicians, and a beautiful example of the possibilities that can be done with sacred music in English.

@frpope - Oh quite! Most of Byrd's music, was inspired my the court dances of the day (as you know); they were writ in 'perfect time' i.e. 3/2, and without the barlines in most cases. Simply fabulous and so English. 🧐
