The Carmelite Monastery of Arlington, Texas, is now under the authority of the Carmelite Association "Christ the King in the USA" and no longer under the authority of the diocesan bishop. This was decided by the Vatican's Dicastery for Religious in a decree on 18 April. The president of the association is Mother Marie of the Incarnation. Six monasteries, including the Carmel of Arlington, belong to the Association. They follow the Roman Rite. Since June 2023, Mgr. Michael Olson, the Bishop of Fort Worth, has led the monastery as papal delegate. In the past, he had a major dispute with Mother Teresa Agnes Gerlach, the convent's superior, who is seriously ill. Both sides went to the police and to court. Mother Gerlach admitted to an online affair with a priest, but later said that her confession was made under the influence of medication. For the third time in three years, the mother, doctor and former Finnish minister Päivi Räsänen is on trial for "hate speech", this time, at the Finnish Supreme Court. "Hate speech" is so called because it is hated by the regime. The investigation started in 2019 with a social media post in which Mrs Räsänen quoted from the first chapter of Romans. She did so in connection with a homosexual propaganda march sponsored by the Finnish Protestants to which she belongs. The investigation also involved a booklet on Christian marriage written by Räsänen almost twenty years ago. The prosecution wants to criminalise Räsänen's Christian faith and has demanded a fine of tens of thousands of euros. The Carmelite convent in Arlington (Texas) is now under the authority of the order and no longer the diocesan bishop. The Vatican dicastery for religious orders issued a decree on Thursdayin which the Carmelite Association "Christ the King in the USA" was granted supervision of the convent. This also ends the mandate of the local diocesan bishop of Fort Worth, Michael Olson, to manage the convent as papal representative. The Carmelite convent is involved in a dispute over alleged celibacy offences by its former superior and drug allegations. In the meantime, the nuns had tried to push back the influence of the bishop, whom they accuse of targeting the convent and its assets, by filing a lawsuit with the state court. The dispute escalated further and further, culminating in an attempt to dismiss the superior and accusations of schism.
